Sometimes he drives to another town.
It isn’t clear what “nearby” means.
Their jackets are off. They’re almost like lovers.
Maybe this is enough.

He’s wanted to tell her. Now he will.
He's living within a set of ideas he won't challenge again
in his lifetime. On the other side,
men watching the horse race in the dark.

One day we took a walk in a place we'd never been.
He’s a soldier, used to carrying a gun.
“Is this for me? Who am I to you?”
Black water on a sunny day means wind.
