Jacqueline Waters

The Actor

They broke it off and
gave it to me I
ground it to a powder
I mixed with water
in an old hated pail

Thus I gave them escape

Though after a while
they turned back: those people
know nothing of gratitude
and what you do
disappears

and may never
be heard of again
and you feel
(as an individual) annulled, given a role
of predictable passage
as though you were their weather

Jacqueline Waters is the author of One Sleeps the Other Doesn't (Ugly Duckling Presse) and A Minute without Danger (Adventures in Poetry). Recent poems have appeared in The American Reader, Clock, Fence, and With+Stand. She edits The Physiocrats, a pamphlet press.
